1. Park your car on level ground.
2. Turn off your engine and let it cool completely. How long to let the car sit before checking oil will depend on the season in New York, but it will usually take at least 30 minutes. 
3. Open your hood and locate the dipstick. If you can’t find it, check your owner’s manual.
4. Pull the dipstick out of the tube and wipe away any oil from it.
5. Re-insert the dipstick back in and then pull it out and check both sides to see where the level is. Dipsticks have little marks to indicate the right oil level. If the top of the oil is between two marks or inside a cross-hatched area, the level is probably fine. If it isn’t, you’ll need to add some more motor oil.

If you’re adding oil, be sure to buy the grade recommended by the automaker in your owner’s manual. Remove the oil filler cap, then, using a funnel, add a little oil at a time until the dipstick reaches the proper level.
